Foods that Trigger Asthma and Allergies

If you have asthma and allergies, you are aware that certain foods can help you manage the condition while some can worsen the situation. Asthma and allergies have no cure, but being aware of several things can give relief from an attack or, sometimes, can even prevent an attack.

Sometimes, even allergies can cause asthma; it is a very common issue. Asthma and allergies have clinical cures, but physicians recommend certain foods to manage asthma and allergies along with medication.

Foods that are known to trigger asthma and allergies include:

1. Sulfites

Sulfites are a common type of preservative present in almost all beverages and some specific foods. It is known as one of the significant triggering foods for asthma and allergies. Most beverages that contain sulfites as preservatives are wines and bottled juices. Foods that contain sulfites include dried fruits, pickled foods, shrimps, and cherries. You must eliminate these foods or beverages from your regular meals and introduce other foods to manage asthma and allergies.

2. Cow’s milk

You may be surprised to know that cow’s milk can also trigger allergy symptoms, especially in children.

This usually occurs when children are introduced to animal milk before they are six months old. Some studies have shown that those who are allergic to milk tend to be allergic to all dairy products.

3. Foods that cause acid reflux

Eating foods that can cause acid reflux or foods that are hard to digest can trigger the symptoms of asthma and allergies. These foods mainly cause acid reflux and put pressure on the diaphragm, causing breathing problems. Some foods that cause acid reflux include cabbage, beans, onions, carbonated drinks, fried foods, and processed foods. Physicians may recommend avoiding those foods to control asthma and allergies.

4. Eggs

Sometimes, the protein in eggs act as an allergen for some people. It is the most common type of food allergy worldwide. Most allergy-causing proteins are found in the white portion of the eggs. If you are allergic to eggs, you must keep in mind that eating them can worsen the situation. The symptoms caused due to this allergen include stomach ache, skin irritations or rashes, and respiratory troubles. You are advised to replace eggs with some preventive foods to manage asthma and allergies.

5. Artificial ingredients

Artificial ingredients, such as preservatives or coloring agents in processed foods, are known to cause asthma. Most physicians acknowledge these foods as triggering foods and recommend avoiding them.

6. Tree nuts

Tree nuts are considered to be a common allergen globally. People who are allergic to nuts are also allergic to foods made with nuts. If you are allergic to one or two types of nuts, you are advised to avoid them altogether.

Asthma and allergies can be life-threatening if the causes are not eliminated. Dietary implementations are the only treatment to control this issue. However, you need to consult the doctor before eliminating allergy-causing foods as they could have some essential nutritional benefits.
